Gitanjali, a cooperative under SEWA’s Green Livelihood Mission, was founded in 2010 to support women waste pickers by providing dignified work and stable income. The 2008 global recession caused a crash in the recycling industry, cutting scrap prices by 50% and severely reducing waste recyclers’ earnings. Additionally, the privatization of door-to-door waste collection left many jobless. In response, Gitanjali was established to offer livelihood opportunities through skill development.

vision

To transform the lives of marginalized waste pickers by offering dignified employment, enhancing their skills, and promoting environmental sustainability. Through collective action, we envision a future where waste is recognized as a valuable resource, and women waste pickers become leaders in the circular economy, contributing to a cleaner and greener world.

MISSION

To empower women waste pickers and their families by providing sustainable livelihoods through skill development, dignity in work, and economic self-reliance. We aim to produce eco-friendly, high-quality stationery products from recycled materials while fostering a sense of ownership and pride among our members.
